The Makaha Sons has their roots in the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau, the seminal Hawaiian group of the mid-70s that championed traditional Hawaiian music. They became simply the Makaha Sons after band member Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole left to pursue a solo career. They have since blossomed into one of the most popular, sought-after recording and performing acts in Hawai‘i.

The Makaha Sons have piled up hundreds of thousands of frequent flyer miles, bringing a taste of Hawai‘i to Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Washington D.C., Japan and Tahiti. Moon plays guitar, John the acoustic upright bass and Jerome the 12-string guitar.

These passionate ambassadors of Hawaiian music also bring gifts of dance, laughter and reminders of Hawai‘i during a simpler time. Many times they would bring with them friends like Dennis Pavao, Robi Kahakalau, Cyril Pahinui, Fiji, Loyal Garner, Melveen Leed, Raiatea Helm, Chinky Mahoe and many others. They’ve had the privilege to sing for a President and Vice President, were featured twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and starred in a PBS TV special. The Makaha Sons have worked hard to become Hawai‘i’s most entertaining group. This is pretty heady stuff for three boys from Nanakuli on O‘ahu’s leeward coast.

Heke wale no – Only the Very Best of the Makaha Sons is an interim record to recap the extraordinary musical accomplishments of this remarkable group up to this point. Expect to see the release of a volume two, and even volume three in the coming years: the Sons show no signs of slowing down. This anthology includes the very best music from five of their Na Hoku Award winning albums, Ke Alaula, Kuikawa, Live on the Road, Golden Hawaiian Melodies and Na Pua o Hawai‘i.
